Special Notes
A race for women only which offers a substantial prize purse, at least by Cape Cod standards, including course record bonuses for new Open and Masters records. All participants who set a PR get a special award. The day includes a 1K kids’ race for 6-9 year olds and a 1/10 mile dash for the under 6 crowd. All kids receive medals. Proceeds benefit local charities selected by the race director. Historically held on the last Sunday in August, the race was moved to an evening race in the month of June in 2009 in order to try to capture some of the local summer and collegiate runners before they returned home in the fall.
Course Records
- Open - Marie Davenport: 15:51 (2002)
- Masters - Judi St. Hilaire: 16:26 (2000)
The Course
Start on West Bay Road just past the intersection of West Bay Road and 1st Avenue facing northeast towards downtown Osterville. Take a right turn on to Wianno Avenue. Pass mile 1 and bear right on to Sea View Avenue. Pass mile 2 and take a sharp right turn on to Parker Road. At the 3 mile mark, turn back on to West Bay Road and sprint the last 1/10 mile to finish in front of East Bay Elementary.
An extremely flat course, it begins with a descent down most of Wianno Avenue, flattens along Sea View Avenue, then climbs gradually with a few rolling hills back up Parker Road towards the finish. Elevation ranges from 10’ to 40’.
Late August usually brings bright sunny days, high humidity and temperatures in the 80’s. While the first and last miles offer a bit of shade, the second mile has virtually no escape from the sun. Brief views of East Bay and Wianno Beach offer a respite through this tough mile. At 2 1/2 miles into the race, watch for crossing golf carts as you run through the middle of The Wianno Club on Parker Road and admire some of the expansive houses that surround the club.
Getting There
Take Route 6 to Exit 5 to Route 149 south. Bear left onto Osterville-West Barnstable Road and follow the signs towards Osterville. At the end of Osterville-West Barnstable Road, turn left on to Main Street and follow into the village of Osterville. In the center of town, bear right on to Wianno Avenue and take the next right on to West Bay Road. East Bay Elementary will be on the left. Parking is available at the school, on the field in back of the school, at the bank and across the street at the library.
