CCAC Annual Awards Banquet Honors Cape Athletes - 6 February 2009

A blazing fire in the hearth, a jolly bar, and the warm welcome of Joanne Creel, Bob Eckerson and John Worgan greeted over 125 of the Cape's multisport athletes and runners to the annual CCAC Awards Banquet at the Dennis Inn on a chilly February evening.  All the women received roses at the door from the honorable Messrs. Eckerson and Worgan in honor of St. Valentine's Day.  After chit-chat and some warming at the bar, members settled down to a delicious meal catered by the inn and then recognized all the Winter Grand Prix winners, special performers and performances of the past year, and Runners of the Year.  Pete Stringer accompanied Janet Kelly as the pair were inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2009.  After all awards were accounted for, Eddie Lohse manipulated the computer keys for another few hours as iPod DJ of the dance floor.

Special Winter Grand Prix Recognitions

Who Invited The Fast Guy?

Joe Navas

(Chatting along at 5:15 pace with Jake Klim, they completely missed the turnaround and decided at about 10 miles that it was time to head back.)

 I Can't Believe I'm Doing This

Thomanda Moree

(Dragged by Cathy Whitelaw to the second Grand Prix, she grudgingly walked - by the end she was nearly running, and some report, almost having a good time!)

What Happened To My Team?

Barry Merrill

(Joining the Weekend Warriors on the 2nd week of their existence, Barry dutifully carried on reporting in as team Weekend Warriors even as they evaporated around him.)

Ryan Gattoni

John Martin

Bill Riley

(They came, they ran their four races, got their 40 points, and called it a day.)

The Most Consistent

Jim Peters - - 2.88

Cheryl Nugent Gomsey - - 4.66

(PIH points varied the least amongst all the races.  Any time these folks show up, you know exactly what they're going to run.)

The Most Erratic

Marcia Duggan - - 35.58

Eddie Lohse - - 64.35

Honorable Mention: Tom Tuttle - - 45.46 (Tom improved every race, earning 512 points on his first and 627 on his last!)

(You never knew what these people were going to run.  Richard won by virtue of one shorted course and one extra-distance walk.)

The Perfect Game

Sadie Tansey

Jane Lovelette

Brandon Bausch

Geof Newton

Barry Merrill

Shawn MacInnes

(70 total points, 1st place in their divisions for every race, these runners dominated their groups and were still able to walk after the Grand Prix wrapped.)

Polly Papsadore - - 4163

(Awarding both performance and attendance, these racers topped the charts.  Each was awarded a club sweatshirt.  * Although we were certain that Brandon was going to take the overall title, Barry closed relentlessly and took the top spot by 1 point.  In honor of their achievements, they were both awarded sweatshirts.)

Age Graded

Bill Riley

Mary Peabody

(After adjusting times based on 2001 WAVA age-grading tables, these folks came out at the top of the heap.)

Family Recognition

Barry and Shawn Merrill

George and Brandon Bausch

Howard and Sadie Tansey

Cathy Whitelaw, Eddie, Richard, and Rose Lohse
