  "Cheating, taking short cuts, or rather more decorously, 'selective course alteration,' is encouraged by the race committee.  Because of the uncertainty about the time the participants run, the first person to cross the finish line, while not disqualified from receiving the trophy, does not automatically win it, unlike other races.  Rather, the winner is selected by lot."
