After a beautiful outing in Monument Beach, the winter may finally catch up with us as we move to Land Ho! in Harwich. Joe Weinberger has designed a fast, 4 mile out and back course from Kildee Road to Belmont Avenue which should be just right after the hills of Weary Travelers. Afterwards we’ll hit the dining room and bar of Land Ho! for some warmth and refreshment. Grand Prix points are starting to really matter now as we come down to the last few races. While a couple of divisions are already clinched, we have the Kaduncs fighting it out for Clydesdale honors; Tom Tuttle is hovering just behind Steve Sullivan, watching for any opportunity to steal a 10; and Kayleen Rosato, Susan Lowry, Kathleen Thomas, and Rachel Young are all within a point of each other as they chase early leader Mary Carroll. Gecko is walking all over those Happy Trails with an overall defeat of HT at YPD and a Mixed Team win at Weary Travelers. This week will see if Gecko will be the team that can finally take down Happy Trails! And it looks like Cranberry Cruisers will merrily cruise into a win in the Women’s division uncontested. See you in Harwich! [GP #4 Results] [Full CCRRWFR Results] [Grand Prix Information] [Grand Prix Scoring]

At the end of November, Pete Stringer did his annual 50 mile run from Provincetown to Barnstable High School to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters Cape Cod. Pete raised over $4500 this year and the CCAC donated $200 to the effort. Pete’s Little Brother, Jon Canon, headed off to college this past fall and inspired by his Big Brother, has become a strong runner in his own right, winning the inaugural Houston Memorial 5K Road Race in November and notching victories in a few other local races. The following excerpt was published in the Cape Cod Times a few months ago, penned and photographed by Tom Moran, Jr. We republish with their permission.
The Big Brother isn’t so big any more and the Little Brother is no longer little as longtime friends Pete Stringer and Jon Canon pose for this photo after last Saturday’s Houston Memorial 5K Walk/Run at Barnstable High School, which was won by Mr. Canon. The pair first met in 1993 as part of the Big Brother/Big Sister Cape Cod program and their friendship has stood the test of time.
For the seventh straight year, Mr. Stringer will be making a 50-mile run to benefit BB/BS Cape Cod. This year, the 70-year old will make his run on Tuesday, November 29, starting in Provincetown at 6 AM and ending at Barnstable High School later in the day. To date, Mr. Stringer has raised more that $19,000 for the program, including a high of $4,125 in 2010.
Proceeds from Mr. Stringer’s P’town to Hyannis trek help fund the Big Brothers/Big Sisters annual Christmas party as well as providing camperships to the organization’s summer program at Camp Greenough in Yarmouth.
Those interested in making a donation can send their contributions to Big Brothers/Big Sisters Cape Cod, c/o Pete Stringer, 344 Bumps River Road, Centerville, MA 02655.

Join us for our monthly meeting at the Dennis Senior Center on 4 January at 7:00PM. In addition to the usual business items and pizza, Karen Zunti will be presenting “Kinesio Taping For Common Running Injuries.” An accomplished triathlete, physical therapist and Certified Kinesio Tape Practitioner, Karen will show us how kinesio taping (you’ve seen all those Olympians with weird patterns taped all over their legs and arms, right?) can aid injury recovery for common running injuries like ITBS, achilles tendonitis, patellar tracking, and plantar fasciitis.

Prominently displaying her CCAC colors, Dari Whitehouse has been picked as a profiled finisher of the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon. Dari finished the 2011 MCM in 3:54:48 in October, qualifying for Boston and marking the completion of her fourth round of cancer therapy. In addition to running Boston and challenging Bill Dalrymple and Jane Lovelette in the Grand Prix, Dari plans on running a 50K and returning to MCM. “If I’ve learned anything over the last two years or so it’s that I’m much stronger than I thought I was and limitations are usually self-imposed and are really great opportunities for growth,” she says. Can you stay awake for 24 hours? Mary Duchesney is organizing a club team for the 2012 Relay For Life, a 24’ish hour walk/run/campout around the DY High School track which raises funds for the American Cancer Society. The 2012 DY event will be held on June 15th and will kick off at 3:00pm. Along with individual and group fundraising targets, the goal is to have a CCAC singlet running on the track at all times. To sign up, go to the DY event page and register as a member of the Cape Cod Athletic Club team. The more that sign up, the shorter the runs! For more information, contact Mary at gooochie@comcast.net or track her down at one of our upcoming races.

For race number 3 of this season’s Grand Prix, we’re heading to visit our friends at YPD who have mapped out their usual 4.2 mile route along the bike path to the Bayberry Hills golf course and back. Instead of tasers and assault weapons, YPD will be treating this year’s post-race visitors to a K9 demonstration and tours of the station. A portion of the monies raised at the race will go to the Massachusetts Iraq and Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund and the Wounded Warrior Project. Parking is available at Mattacheese Middle School. The run starts at 11:00AM and is $10 for club members, non-members and friends. Please bring a dish to share for the potluck at the station and after all is cleaned up, festivities will adjourn to Captain Parker’s for the post-post-race fun. Please also consider bringing a new toy to contribute to the station’s Toys for Tots drive. See you there! [Grand Prix Information] [Grand Prix Standings] [GP#2 Results]
