Hello fellow CCAC’ers.

Here we are in lovely February and we know that can only mean one thing-that many of us are preparing to run in the Hyannis Marathon, 1/2 Marathon or 10k on Sunday February 28th, 2010.

These are gorgeous but hard races that take their twists and turns through the roads of Hyannis, to the beaches and past some spectacular views. For those who like to run them, these races represent many things; the culmination of a hard fall/winter training schedule, a chance to qualify for Boston (well, maybe for 2011 anyway) or just to prove one’s crazy enough to crank out a race in February on Cape Cod. Whatever the reason, one thing that makes the whole experience more enjoyable (and considerably more bearable) is seeing your fellow CCAC’ers out there not just cheering you on, but helping you out.

For those who don’t know this already, the CCAC gets a large portion of its operating budget from the organizer of this race, as we in turn provide him with volunteers on the roads and at the registration table. We have some volunteers for both, but we need a lot more and we need you to commit to this now.

This is how our club is able to provide a fun and safe atmosphere for our events such as the annual banquet and our Grand Prix series, it helps us run our own club business and it allows us to donate to the many charities that we so generously support.

If you are not already signed up to run one of the races, which are are all sold out at this point, I ask that you consider giving just a few hours of your time to help out your friends, your family or your fellow club members who are running by volunteering to direct people on the course or help with registration. Thanks so much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.  ~ Joe Navas – President, CCAC

The two serious annual New England road race series, after our Winter Grand Prix of course, get under way in a few short weeks. First to hit the roads is the USATF New England Road Grand Prix so we’ll start with their schedule first:

28 February Jones Realty Group 10 Mile, Amherst, MA
21 March New Bedford Half Marathon, New Bedford, MA
22 May Bedford Rotary 12K, Bedford, NH
6 June Rhody 5K, Lincoln, RI [Men Only]
18 July Stowe 8 Miler, Stowe, VT
14 August Bridge of Flowers 10K, Shelburne Falls, MA
3 October PVD McDonald House Women’s 5K, Providence, RI
17 October BayState Marathon, Lowell, MA

Every one of these races is challenging, scenic and will pit you against the best in New England. We’re particularly fond of Shelburne and Stowe while Bedford is one of those rare opportunities to score an asterisk next to your name and set your 12K PR.

That other race series is brought to us by New England Runner and features a tour of some of the best pubs in New England, albeit at much shorter distances than those of the USATF series. While Cape Cod Irish Village drops off the calendar this year, Mighty Meehan returns as the Cape Cod representative of this perennial circuit. You can follow all of the action as it unfolds on the NER Pub Series blog … and catch up on the past few years of series history while you’re there. Here’s the schedule for 2010:

11 April Doyles 5 Mile, Jamaica Plain, MA
23 May Evans Run 5K, Norwell, MA
6 June Corrib Pub 5K, West Roxbury, MA
12 September Mighty Meehan 5K, West Dennis, MA
19 September Portland Trail to Ale 10K, Portland, ME
17 October Paddy’s Shillelagh Shuffle 3M, W. Newton, MA

While we certainly have plenty of racing available on-Cape, club members do occasionally make it over the bridge … so if you’re headed off-Cape, be sure to take your CCAC singlet along (remember that the club will reimburse a portion of race entry fees for races with a team-scoring component like the USATF-NE races – see the Team Expense Reimbursement Policy) and subscribe to the CCAC e-mail list to coordinate rides. See you on the roads!

Club members gathered at the Dennis Inn on February 6th to honor performances from 2009, to distribute 2009-2010 Winter Grand Prix awards, to recognize the contributions of some special members, and to dance! Long-time members Joanne Creel and Brian Kelly were inducted into the CCAC Hall of Fame and John Worgan was presented with the Johnny Kelley Award for his contributions to the club over the years. We’ll be combining the Day After Run with Kevin’s 10 Miler this year so be ready to run from Hanlon’s Shoes in Hyannis at 11:00am. If you don’t want to go the whole distance, we have some perfect ideas for alternate routes or you can run out as far as you want on the course and then turn around and come back. See you Sunday!
