top_100 At the beginning of a new decade, can you run for a minimum of 30 minutes a day, every day for 100 days starting on January 1st? We bet you can! If you’d like to take the Challenge and post your progress for others to follow on a shared Google spreadsheet, send us your e-mail address and we’ll send you all the information on the Challenge … or you can tackle the 100 days on your own and send us an e-mail in April when you finish. 100 days starts counting tomorrow! How far will you make it?

k0016694   Just a little bit of sun and we surely would have seen temperatures pushing 60F at today’s Grand Prix – but that was not to be as fog, drizzle and a steady southwest wind kept temps at a chilly but manageable 48F. Geof Newton took the overall win from Brandon Bausch in the last 1/10 of a mile but Brandon still leads the General Classification with a whopping 1526 points with 4 races still to go. Dede Griesbauer, pro triathlete and the top American woman finisher at Kona in 2009, visited us from Boston and bested club triathlete Charlotte Johnson, 27:07 to 28:25. Another multisporter, Eastham’s Katie McCully, rounded out the top 3 women to place 19th overall in 29:29. [Full Race Results]

While some teams had trouble mustering the troops to field full complements (the Old Dogs suffered a hamstring blowout while Wicked Old Warriors, IFAW and Road Hogs no-heighted), Happy Trails, YPD Blue and BPD Blue had no problems finding heads to count. Happy Trails took the overall win from the Nauset Warriors led by the 3 top-10 performances of Jason McWhirter (4), Peter Lyons (8) and Howard Tansey (10) but the strong female contingent of Nauset crushed any thought of competition in their mixed division. Meanwhile, a struggling Level 5 team was lucky that Old Dogs couldn’t muster a full team in the men’s division as they took the division win by default. [Team Results]

A challenging course, settled upon at the last minute, greeted runners with constantly rolling hills and the remains of our early winter snowfall. A few strategically placed puddles kept things interesting and even though temperatures were perfect for running, many took advantage of the water stop just past two miles to rest after the Bayberry Golf Club hill climb.

Chowder from Capt. Parker’s Pub in W. Yarmouth and a full spread of potluck items were quickly demolished by the 125 hungry runners and walkers. And after running and eating, the remaining crowd was treated to tours of the YPD facility and demonstrations of firearms and tactical methods by the YPD SWAT Team. Proceeds from the race were donated to the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund.

Next stop on 3 January, celebrate the New Year in Centerville at the home of Barry and Doreen Merrill.

There’s still a bunch of snow on the ground but Sunday’s forecast calls for oodles of rain so driving and parking shouldn’t be a problem as we converge on Yarmouth for our special holiday Grand Prix race number 4. Join us at 11:00AM on Sunday at the YPD station at One Brad Erickson Way (off of Higgins Crowell Road). Post-run goodies at the station include a raffle, food, potluck and other fun stuff. Parking is available at the station and at Mattacheese Middle School – please do NOT park on Higgins Crowell Road. Conditions have prompted a minor course change – plan on 4 miles along the Bayberry Hills bike path without any dirt or cross-country sections. [More GP 4 information] And if you managed to get out for a run last Sunday and want to log your effort in our virtual GP#3 (and take on Pete Stringer’s snow-plow bungee time of 16:10), send us an e-mail.

Due to the increasing intensity of the storm this morning and hazardous driving conditions up until race time, we’re canceling today’s Grand Prix race at Campari’s. Hop on the treadmill or the trainer instead to log those miles. And if you do happen to run 3.5 miles, either indoors or carefully through the snow, send in your time and we’ll post ‘virtual’ results for the run. Don’t forget next week’s race at YPD in Yarmouth – read this important information from our race hosts! See you next week and run safe!

gift-certificate[1] The Nauset Warriors continued to dominate the 2009-2010 Winter Grand Prix with strong individual showings posted by Brandon Bausch, 1st overall, and Robyn Argo, 2nd female behind Sue Lowry, at Harry’s 5 Miler on Sunday. Brandon and Robyn led the Warriors mixed team to the top of their division with an impressive score of 8 but their overall finishes weren’t enough to overcome the combined might of the Old Dogs; Barry Merrill (3), Mike Sellars (6) and Gene Cormier (15), who nipped team Happy Trails by 3 points for the overall team victory. This year’s race marked the 20th year for Harry’s 5 Miler and was run in honor of Ed Gill, a dear friend and ardent supporter of the CCAC over the years. Chowder supplied by Harry’s and mussels from Mike Naughton’s aquaculture beds mixed well with beer, soda, and water after the race. The series continues on 20 December at Campari’s in North Chatham, 3.5 miles of hilly Chatham neighborhoods for your enjoyment!
